Giants announce Rapira signing

New Zealand prop Sam Rapira will join Huddersfield Giants for Super League XXI.

The 28 year-old announced in March he would leave the NRL at the end of the season and has now signed a two year deal at the John Smith’s Stadium to start in November.

“I decided to sign up with the Giants because I’ve heard positive things about the club and they have shown a lot of enthusiasm in getting me over there,” he told the Huddersfield website.

“The thought of moving to the other side of the world with our two daughters is a bit daunting but our friends and family have been supportive throughout this process and we are excited to experience a new country and culture.”

Giants coach Paul Anderson believes Rapira will be well suited to Super League; “Sam is a winner and a tough competitor who will enjoy the conditions here.”

Rapira, a World Cup winner in 2008, has made just one appearance for New Zealand Warriors in the NRL this season due to a hamstring injury.

Sam’s brother, Steve, had a short spell in Super League with Salford back in 2013.
