Winder promoted at Wigan

Wigan Warriors have made John Winder assistant coach to Shaun Wane.

Winder, who has been promoted from the junior assistant coach role, replaces Paul Deacon who left the club to take up a position with rugby union side Sale Sharks last summer.

Winder previously spent time in Melbourne where he had three years coaching Storm’s Under 18s and reserve teams.

In 2013 he was named as Wigan’s head of youth development by Michael Maguire and enjoyed Grand Final success with the club’s Under 19s before being promoted to junior assistant coach to the first team the following year.

Following Deacon’s departure in July, Winder filled the role on a temporary basis and has now been given the job permanently.

Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan told the club’s website: “We advertised the position of First Team Assistant Coach last year and although we received a good number of high-profile quality Coaches, it was clear that we already had the ideal candidate in John Winder.”
