Leeds Rhinos’ captain Danny McGuire has been ruled out for six to eight weeks with a knee injury.
McGuire, who took over as the club’s captain from Kevin Sinfield for 2016, was forced from the field during the first half of the Rhinos’ round one defeat at home to Warrington Wolves on Thursday night.
The injury means the half-back will miss the upcoming World Club Challenge match against North Queensland Cowboys.
Leeds’ head coach Brian McDermott told the club’s website: “It is disappointing for Danny to be injured in the first game of the season especially for him as he will now miss the Dacia World Club Challenge. Our medical staff will be working with him to get him back fully fit and we will look forward to having him back available.”
Meanwhile, chief executive has ruled out a recall for Sinfield to cover for the absence of McGuire.
