Smith resigns as Wildcats coach

Brian Smith has resigned as Wakefield Wildcats coach with immediate effect.

The club released a short statement on its website on Tuesday saying:

“Wakefield Trinity Wildcats can confirm that Brian Smith has resigned as Head Coach with immediate effect.

A press conference will take place at 12.30pm tomorrow (Wednesday) at Belle Vue Stadium. There will be no further comment at this time.”

Smith’s last game in charge of the Wildcats was Sunday’s 42-28 home defeat to Catalans Dragons – Wakefield’s fourth defeat in their opening five Super League games.

The club’s captain Danny Kirmond believes that the 61 year-olds decision to leave was due to personal reasons:

“It was a shock for us,” Kirmond told the Wakefield Express. “Brian told us his decision was due to personal reasons and nothing to do with us, the players.”

Smith joined the Wildcats in May last year and signed a one-year deal to stay at Belle Vue in October after keeping Wakefield in Super League with victory over Bradford Bulls in the Million Pound Game.

Assistant coach Stuart Dickens will take charge of this Friday’s trip to St Helens.
