Solly to leave Super League for South Sydney

Blake Solly will leave his post as Super League general manager to become chief executive of South Sydney Rabbitohs next month.

Solly has spent a total of seven years at the RFL, including the last two as general manager.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to join one of the best,” Australian-born Solly said via the BBC.

“South Sydney Rabbitohs are a powerhouse on and off the field, the most successful club in NRL history with a passionate fan base and extremely strong board.

“It will be tough to leave a great group of people at the RFL and Super League, and I would like to thank the staff, clubs and fans for their support.”

Solly oversaw the most recent transformation of Super League’s structure which saw the introduction of the ‘Super 8s’ and ‘Middle 8s’ phases, bringing back promotion and relegation between the Super League and Championship divisions.

“The competition is in great shape, and in a strong position to grow quickly in the coming years. However, the time is right to return with my family to Australia after over 11 years in the United Kingdom,” Solly added.

“I would also like to express my appreciation to the RFL for allowing me to begin work at South Sydney in May.”

Rabbitohs chairman Nicholas Pappas said of the appointment: “We’re delighted to be bringing someone of Blake’s calibre to our club as CEO.

“His experience in managing one of the code’s largest professional bodies internationally, coupled with his background in the legal profession, is a perfect mix for our club.”

The Rabbitohs, who have English brothers Sam, George and Thomas Burgess on their playing roster, currently sit in 8th place on the NRL ladder after six rounds.
